Agoda vs Booking.com — Who's Cheaper? 30 Hotels Tested

19 August 2026 · By Jason Lee

The Real Question Isn't Agoda vs Booking.com

Type "Agoda vs Booking.com" into Google and you'll find dozens of articles giving you a two-way verdict: pick a winner, move on. That answer is incomplete — and if you stop reading after it, you're probably still overpaying.

We tested 30 real hotels across six cities — London, Paris, Barcelona, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali — comparing three things side by side for the exact same room, on the exact same dates: Agoda's price, Booking.com's price, and Agoda's price after running an automated country-by-country check with AnyGo.

The headline number is simple: Agoda beat Booking.com's price in 24 of 30 hotels (80%). But that's only half the story. Agoda+AnyGo beat Agoda's own listed price on 6 out of every 10 bookings in this test — a different country storefront was quietly offering the identical room for less, invisible to anyone comparing Agoda and Booking.com the normal way.

There's even one hotel in this test where Booking.com genuinely beat Agoda's listed price — and Agoda+AnyGo still beat both of them. We'll show you exactly which one, with the real screenshots, further down.

See It First

Before the full breakdown and methodology, here's what that gap actually looks like on one real hotel — same room, same three nights:

Villa Eiffel Mademoiselle

Agoda (left) vs Booking.com (right) — Villa Eiffel Mademoiselle, Paris, Traditional Double, 3 nights. Agoda: $749.01 · Booking.com: $1,014.53.

Villa Eiffel Mademoiselle

Agoda + AnyGo — same room, same dates. $688.62.

Three prices, same room, same dates — a $325.91 difference between the most and least expensive option. Here's the full test behind that number.

How We Tested This

We picked 5 hotels in each of 6 cities — 3-star-and-up properties, taken from Agoda's own default sort order (the first five qualifying hotels returned, unranked and unfiltered by us) so we weren't cherry-picking deals — and priced the identical room for the identical 3-night stay (2 adults, 1 room) on both Agoda and Booking.com. We matched room type, cancellation policy, and breakfast inclusion across both platforms before recording a price, and where Booking.com listed a refundable damage deposit separately, we excluded it so we were comparing apples to apples. We then ran the same Agoda booking through AnyGo, which checks the identical room across 30+ country storefronts on Agoda and surfaces the cheapest one.

Full step-by-step methodology — including how we handled edge cases — is in the appendix at the end of this article.

Round 1: Agoda vs Booking.com

Here's the direct answer to the question you searched for: across all 30 hotels, Agoda was cheaper than Booking.com in 24 (80%). Booking.com won in 6 (20%).

What's notable is how consistent that is. It wasn't one region skewing the average — Agoda beat Booking.com in exactly 4 of 5 hotels in every single city we tested: London, Paris, Barcelona, Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, and Bali. If you're choosing which platform to open first, Agoda is the better default almost everywhere.

But "better default" isn't the same as "lowest possible price" — and that's where this gets interesting.

Round 2: Where Agoda+AnyGo Changes the Answer

Here's what a normal Agoda-vs-Booking comparison misses entirely: Agoda doesn't show every guest the same price. It shows different guests different prices depending on which country they appear to be browsing from — a geo-pricing system driven by regional discount and coupon programs. There's no setting, banner, or warning inside Agoda that tells you a cheaper version of your exact room exists on another country's storefront — the only way to find out is to check that country's version of the same page yourself.

AnyGo checks the same room across 30+ of Agoda's country storefronts in seconds and surfaces whichever one is cheapest. In this test, that check found a cheaper price than Agoda's own listed price in 19 of the 30 hotels — 63% of the time — averaging $39.79 in additional savings per hotel where a saving was found, or about 9% off Agoda's own price.

That completely changes the scoreboard. Factor AnyGo into the comparison and the "Agoda ecosystem" (Agoda alone, plus Agoda checked through AnyGo) beats Booking.com's price in 25 of 30 hotels — 83%, up from 80% for Agoda alone — while Booking.com's win rate drops to 17%.

Put simply: Agoda usually beats Booking.com. But Agoda+AnyGo beats Agoda itself 6 times out of 10.

The Case That Proves It: Zedwell Piccadilly

Here's the case that makes the point hardest to argue with. Zedwell Piccadilly in London was the one hotel in our test where Booking.com genuinely beat Agoda's own price — $629.73 on Booking.com versus $633.44 on Agoda. By the normal "compare Agoda and Booking, pick whichever is lower" logic, Booking.com wins this one outright.

Zedwell Piccadilly

Zedwell Piccadilly

Zedwell Piccadilly, London — Cocoon 2, 3 nights. Agoda: $633.44 · Booking.com: $629.73 · Agoda + AnyGo: $574.40.

Running the same Agoda booking through AnyGo found Singapore's storefront offering the identical room at $574.40 — $55.33 cheaper than Booking.com's price, and $59.04 cheaper than Agoda's own. The platform that "lost" the Agoda-vs-Booking comparison still ended up sitting on the cheapest price on the table. Comparing two platforms manually isn't enough — the bigger gap was hiding inside the platform you'd already dismissed.

More Real Hotels, Real Prices

Numbers are easy to write and hard to trust. Here are five more real hotels from this test, with the actual prices we captured on each platform.

Why This Happens

Agoda runs country-specific discount and coupon programs — the same hotel room can carry a different active promotion depending on which country's storefront you're browsing from. We can't say for certain what Agoda's internal reasoning is — only Agoda knows that — but based on how consistent and structured the pattern is across hotels and countries, we suspect it's an intentional regional pricing strategy, not a bug or a loophole. We first documented this pattern in our original 30-hotel study, our Agoda hotel savings guide, where the largest single gap we found was 37.8% between the most and least expensive country for the identical room.

This is worth being precise about: our test only checked Agoda's country-storefront pricing — we didn't run the same 30+ country comparison against Booking.com, so we genuinely don't know whether Booking.com has a similar geo-pricing pattern of its own. What we can say is that a standard "Booking.com vs Agoda" comparison, run once from a single browsing location, won't surface this kind of gap on either platform — the only way to find it is to deliberately check a platform against itself, across countries. That's what AnyGo does for Agoda specifically.

What This Means for You

If you already default to Agoda over Booking.com: you're right, most of the time — but you're still probably leaving money on the table in 6 out of 10 bookings, averaging around 9%.

If you're someone who manually flips between Agoda and Booking.com tabs trying to find the best deal: you're solving a smaller problem than the one that actually costs you money. The bigger gap in this test wasn't between platforms — it was hiding inside Agoda itself, between countries.

The risk of checking is zero. On the average $39.79 saving we found, a user keeps roughly $26 of it. 2 of the 19 hotels in this test had a saving within AnyGo's free tier (under $10), so the result reveal was completely free — there's no scenario where checking costs you money.

Common Questions

Why won't you just tell me the cheapest country?

Two reasons, both visible in this test's own data. First, there often isn't a single answer: at Traders Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, four different countries — Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, and Indonesia — tied for the exact same cheapest price. At Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona, three completely different countries — Japan, Singapore, and the Philippines — landed within $1.25 of each other, close enough to be functionally tied.

Second, even the most common winner isn't reliable enough to memorize. Across the 19 hotels where we found a saving, 9 different countries turned out to be the cheapest at least once — and the single most frequent one still wasn't the answer for the two largest-dollar savings in this entire test. A reader who learned one "go-to" country and stopped there would have missed the two biggest wins we found. There's no shortcut that replaces actually checking.

Is this against Agoda's terms?

Agoda's terms of service don't explicitly prohibit browsing from a different country. And the scenario is entirely ordinary — travellers use VPNs every day for security and privacy reasons while abroad, and simply happen to see different prices as a result. You're booking directly on Agoda, paying with your own card, staying in a real hotel room. Nothing about that is unusual or problematic.

AnyGo works the same way. You browse Agoda normally, AnyGo checks what prices are available from other countries on your behalf, and you book directly on Agoda as usual. No VPN required on your end at all.

What if AnyGo finds nothing?

It's free. You only pay a percentage of a saving that's actually found — and even then, savings under $10 cost nothing at all.

What about just using a VPN to switch countries myself?

It's possible, but slow and unreliable — you'd need to manually reload the booking from a dozen-plus VPN locations and compare totals by hand, and connection issues can distort what you see. We tested that approach directly in our Agoda VPN trick guide.

The Bottom Line

Agoda usually beats Booking.com — that part of the search result is true. But "Agoda usually beats Booking.com" isn't the same as "you're paying the lowest possible price." In this test, Agoda+AnyGo beat Agoda's own listed price 6 times out of 10, and beat Booking.com even in the one case where Agoda alone had already lost.

If you're booking on Agoda, checking with AnyGo costs nothing, takes seconds, and there's no risk of paying more once you've checked.

Appendix: Full Methodology

Hotel selection

We tested 30 hotels across six cities — three in Asia (Kuala Lumpur, Bali, Phuket) and three in Europe (Paris, London, Barcelona) — five hotels per city. Selection was Agoda-first: for each city, we took the first five qualifying properties from Agoda's own default sort order, filtered to "Hotel" property type and 3-star-and-up, so we weren't hand-picking properties likely to show a gap.

Matching room, cancellation, and breakfast terms

Room type, cancellation policy, and breakfast inclusion were recorded from Agoda first. We then searched Booking.com second to find the closest matching equivalent — same room type, same cancellation policy, same breakfast inclusion. Where no matching room existed on Booking.com, we skipped that hotel and moved to the next qualifying Agoda property.

Dates and stay parameters

Every booking used the same stay: check-in Monday, October 5, 2026, check-out Thursday, October 8, 2026 — 3 nights, 2 adults, 1 room. These dates were chosen deliberately: roughly seven weeks out from the test date, a Monday check-in to avoid weekend-leisure pricing skew, and outside any major holiday period on either the Asia or Europe side. All 30 comparisons were captured within a two-day window, August 17–18, 2026, so prices reflect a single snapshot in time rather than being collected piecemeal over weeks.

Handling price components

Minor differences in free-cancellation deadline dates between Agoda and Booking.com (for example, "free cancel before 2 Oct" vs. "before 4 Oct") were noted but explicitly excluded from the price comparison — they don't change what the guest is being asked to pay for. Where Booking.com's total included a separate refundable damage deposit that Agoda has no equivalent line item for, that deposit was subtracted before comparing — the excl.-deposit figure is the one used throughout this article, since it reflects what the guest is actually paying for the room, not a fully-refundable hold.

Tool, currency, and disclosure

All prices were captured using the AnyGo Chrome extension in Incognito mode. All amounts in this article, including the data table above, are shown in USD. We have no affiliation with Agoda or Booking.com to disclose. As with any sample of this size, this is a directional snapshot, not an exhaustive audit — prices on both platforms fluctuate over time and by search session.

Why the cheapest country isn't named

Outside of the Zedwell Piccadilly example above, we deliberately don't publish which country was cheapest for each hotel in this article. As covered in the FAQ, the cheapest country varies by hotel — sometimes several countries tie or land within cents of each other — with no single reliable shortcut a reader could memorize and reuse. The point of this test isn't "book from country X"; it's that the gap exists and has to be checked per booking, which is the problem AnyGo is built to solve automatically.

Want this checked automatically?

AnyGo compares the same Agoda room across 39 countries in seconds, right on the booking page. You only pay if it finds you a cheaper price.
